Japanese Acer Palmatum

Location:  Place your maple tree outdoors in an area with bright, filtered light (semi shade).

Sun Protection:  The delicate foliage can easily scorch in harsh, direct summer sun. It is best to provide morning sun and afternoon shade.

​​​​​​​Winter Protection:  While these trees are frost-hardy, their shallow root systems in bonsai pots require protection from strong, drying winter winds and deep freezes (temperatures below -10°C). Consider moving them to a sheltered area that is out of the wind.

Soil Moisture:  Keep the soil consistently moist, but avoid making it waterlogged. 

Frequency:  Check the soil daily—water thoroughly when the top layer begins to dry out. During hot summer days, this may require watering once or twice a day. 

Technique:  Water generously until excess water drains from the bottom of the pot, ensuring that the entire root mass is saturated.

Soil Mix:  Use a well-draining bonsai soil mixture, ideally containing akadama, pumice, and lava rock, to prevent root rot.

Fertilizing:   Apply a balanced, organic bonsai fertilizer during the growing season (spring through early autumn). Reduce fertilizer strength during the hottest summer months and stop entirely in late fall and winter.

Spring/Summer Pinching:  Use the "clip-and-grow" method. When new shoots grow to about five pairs of leaves, pinch or prune them back to two or three leaves to maintain the branch structure.

Structural Pruning: The best time for heavy structural pruning and branch removal is in late winter or autumn to minimize sap loss, or "bleeding." Seal larger cuts with bonsai cut paste to prevent infections.

Wiring:  Maple branches can be somewhat brittle, so handle wiring carefully. Apply the wire gently, and consider using guy wires as a safer alternative to bend stiff branches.
