Wisteria Sinesis

Sunlight:  Position your wisteria in full sun, ensuring it receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day. This is crucial for producing abundant blooms.

Location: Keep the plant outdoors. Although wisterias are frost-hardy when planted in the ground, the roots in shallow bonsai pots need protection from extreme winter freezes. During the peak winter months, move the pots to a cold frame or protect with frost guard.

High Demand: Wisterias grow rapidly and require a lot of water. Be sure not to let the soil dry out completely.

Summer Care:  During the summer heat, you may need to water your Wisteria multiple times a day. Some growers place the pot in a shallow tray filled with water during peak heat to prevent the leaves from scorching.

Winter Care:  Reduce watering in the winter, but make sure the root ball stays moist.

Post-Flowering Care:  Immediately after flowering, remove all dead flower stalks. This prevents the plant from wasting energy on seed production.

Tendril Control:  During the summer, new green shoots (tendrils) will grow quickly. Trim these back to 4 to 6 leaves (or around 4 nodes) to maintain a compact bonsai shape.

Winter Maintenance: In mid-winter, prune the spurs back to about 4 inches, ensuring that you leave about 3 buds on each branch.

Note: Avoid pinching out the tips in early spring, as this will remove potential flower buds.

Nutrient Needs:  Apply solid organic bonsai fertilizer monthly, or use a balanced liquid fertilizer weekly during the growing season.

Watch Nitrogen:  Choose a fertilizer that is not excessively high in nitrogen, as an overload can lead to excessive leaf growth at the expense of flowering.
