Caring for an azalea bonsai differs from traditional bonsai because of its specific flowering and acidic soil needs.
Placement: Keep your azalea outdoors in a sunny spot that gets filtered or dappled direct sunlight. Protect it from harsh afternoon sun and frost.
Soil & Water: They require highly acidic, moisture-retaining, well-draining soil (like pure Kanuma). Water with rainwater or filtered water, as hard tap water can be too alkaline.
Pruning: Prune heavily only immediately after flowering. Pruning later in the summer will cut off next year's flower buds. Remove all dead blooms at the base of the flower.
Fertilizing: Use an organic, acidic azalea fertilizer throughout the growing season. Pause fertilizing while the tree is actively blooming.
