Perlite is used  as a component of soilless growing mixes where it provides aeration and optimum moisture retention, keeping it loose, well-draining, and defying compaction, leading to superior plant growth. It has a neutral pH, is sterile and of course weed-free. It is very useful in all container plant cultivation including specialist bonsai trees.
